This holiday season will be very different from past seasons with airlines drastically reducing the number of available flights.
A recent study by USA Today indicates that approximately 3,000 fewer flights will operate this Thanksgiving season. The reductions in flights means that travelers who are able to fly will be on fuller planes, pay higher prices, and have less options if their flights are delayed or cancelled.
This Thanksgiving, travelers can expect US Airways to cut back 40% of its flights, United Airlines to cut back 22%, and Delta to cut back 26%.
Virtually all airports will see a reduction in traffic. Chicago's O'Hare International Airport will see non-stop service to the airport drop drastically this year over last year. 84% of U.S. airports that served O'Hare last Thanksgiving will see reductions in flights this year.
For those travelers who have not yet made their plans, they can expect to pay much higher fares the closer they get to the holiday or find themselves without the desired flight availability.
