Castles Along the Rhine River Cruise
October 22-November 1, 2015
Amsterdam to Basel | 10 Days
2 Days in Amsterdam, Plus River Cruise Aboard Uniworld's S.S. Antoinette

Hosted by Fox World Travel Tour Manager Colleen Alsberg

Be inspired by the fairytale beauty and romantic spirit of the castle-laden, vineyard-rich Rhine. Join Colleen Alsberg, of Fox World Travel, on this Select Group Vacation October 22-November 1, 2015.  The Rhine River is your gateway to a truly enchanting journey. Sail her shimmering tide past stately castles, lush hillside vineyards, and storybook towns. You’ll discover highlights of four countries, The Netherlands, Germany, France and Switzerland, on this itinerary that transports you into a fairytale world, one full of romance and beauty. And Uniworld’s Epicurean Adventurer Program™ gives you unique experiences like an exclusive wine tasting at Castle Vollrads in Germany, a Black Forest cake-baking demonstration and tasting, and much more.

Flowers tumble from baskets lining streets of half-timbered houses, and lights glint off quiet canals. A mighty river carries ships and cargo through a landscape shaped by time and history. The spires of Medieval churches and castles appear around each bend in the river, and vineyards climb the verdant hillsides.

Cruise along the Rhine—Germany on one side, France on the other—and savor French joie de vivre and German Gemütlichkeit . Discover Alsace, whose dual French and German heritage has given it fabulous food and a wine-making tradition that goes back to the Romans. Bicycle beside the river, passing Roman ruins and Romanesque churches. Marvel at castles that were once mighty fortresses guarding territory and trade routes, and that now tower above the water as romantic ruins. Visit the fairytale cities of Riquewihr, Kayserberg, Colmar, Strasbourg, and Rüdesheim, and taste delightful white wines in the villages where the grapes are grown. Beethoven and Byron loved the romantic landscapes of the Rhine River. The beauty that inspired them is still yours to experience.

Itinerary

October 22: Depart Chicago O'Hare Airport for Amsterdam

Motor coach transportation is included from various pick up points to Chicago O’Hare airport for the overnight flight to Amsterdam.

October 23: Amsterdam

Arrive at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport where you’ll be transferred to the Crowne Plaza City Centre Hotel (or similar).  Afternoon and evening at leisure.

October 24: Amsterdam

Breakfast included and at leisure at the hotel.

Morning departure for half day tour of Amsterdam including a canal cruise.

AMSTERDAM CITY TOUR, HALF DAY

You’ll meet your English speaking guide and begin your city tour of Amsterdam. Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, with its 700-year-old story and the famous canals with more than 1000 bridges, is called the Venice of the north. The excursion takes you past the historic city center with the dam square and the royal palace, the canals with the famous 'lean bridge 'and the museum quarter with its various famous museum.

A visit in Amsterdam would be less spectacular without a canal tour. Originally the canals were not used as a waterway and also the beautiful sight was not decisive. The main function of the canals was to drain the swampy building sites: Nothing of the defiance proved that the water was not only practical, but also beautiful. The canal boat is the best way to enjoy Amsterdam as it takes you past the architectural and historical sites of Amsterdam.

Later you’ll visit the diamond factory, one of the largest diamond locations of Amsterdam where the art of the grinding is demonstrated. You will see how an insignificant stone is slowly transformed into a twinkling, precious jewel, in which the light reflects itself in all colors of the rainbow. Amsterdam and diamonds belong together.

Afternoon and evening on own. Accommodations at the Crowne Plaza City Centre Hotel  (or similar)

October 25: Amsterdam (embark) MotorcoachEmbark/Disembark

Breakfast included and at leisure at the hotel.

Depart hotel and transfer to the S.S. Antoinette (D)

 Rhine River Cruise

October 26: Cologne UNESCO

Featured Excursion: Cologne walking tour with Cologne Cathedral visit.

Stroll through the narrow streets of Old Town Cologne with your guide, passing by tiny squares and small churches as you make your way to Cologne Cathedral, the city’s most famous landmark. It took 632 years for Germany’s largest cathedral to be completed, and it is one of the most important Gothic churches in Europe. Inside this UNESCO World Heritage Site, the earthly remains of the fabled Three Kings—the Magi—are believed to lie at rest. You’ll learn about the history of the cathedral and its artwork, especially the pieces surrounding the Shrine of the Magi. Christian pilgrims have been flocking here for centuries. In fact, one of the cathedral’s expansions was intended to accommodate the many faithful who travel from far and wide to experience the wonder of this sacred site.

In the evening, enjoy a Captain’s Welcome Reception and Gala Dinner.

Note: On Sundays and Catholic holidays, guided tours inside the cathedral will not be possible.

 Rhine River Cruise

October 27: Koblenz, cruising the romantic Rhine River, Boppard Choice Is YoursMotorcoach

Featured Excursions: Choice of Koblenz walking tour or aerial cable car ride to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress; and guided Boppard village stroll.

Awaken on the romantic Rhine and enjoy a morning cruise along the castle-lined river. German Corner, with its famous monument to Kaiser Wilhelm I, announces your arrival in Koblenz, where the Moselle and Rhine rivers meet.

Choose a walking tour highlighting the appeal of Koblenz—its charming lanes and historic squares, the picturesque alleyways and fountains in the old quarter, and the 12th-century churches of St. Florin and Our Beloved Lady. Or take a thrilling ride on an aerial tram across the Rhine to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress—whose ruined walls once inspired Lord Byron—which in one form or another has stood high on the hill overlooking the rivers’ confluence since its beginnings as a fortification in 1,000 BC. The view from the fortress is dazzling. End your day with a guided stroll around Boppard, a typical wine village on the shores of the Rhine.

 Rhine River Cruise

October 28: Cruising the romantic Rhine River, Rüdesheim UNESCOUniworld ExclusiveMotorcoachWinetasting

Featured Excursions: Exclusive Castle Vollrads wine tasting.

Rüdesheim has been a magnet for romantics since the 19th century. Among its most famous sights is the Drosselgasse, a narrow alleyway lined with wine taverns and shops. Explore the town at your leisure, then be our guest at a princely wine tasting at prestigious Castle Vollrads, a handsome 14th-century castle perfectly situated in the vineyard-covered hills of the Rheingau. Though it is one of the smallest wine-growing regions of Germany, it is world famous for its Rieslings—and Castle Vollrads is one of the world’s top wine estates for the varietal. Later, find a spot on deck for an afternoon of scenic cruising along the romantic Rhine and take in the breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage-designated Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Picturesque castles appear around every bend in the river for a 40-mile stretch, a sight that inspired poets, painters, and composers throughout the 19th century.

 Rhine River Cruise

October 29: Germersheim (Speyer) Choice Is YoursUniworld ExclusiveMotorcoach

Featured Excursions: Choice of Speyer walking tour or exclusive Doktorenhof vinegar estate visit and tasting

A guided walking tour through Speyer reveals a Medieval town with a grand heritage and a compact historic center dominated by the largest Romanesque cathedral in Europe. With its basilica laid out in the form of a Latin cross, including four towers and two domes, this architectural marvel is a symbol of Medieval imperial power; the rulers of three dynasties are interred here. Nearby, a well-preserved mikvah, or ritual bath, bears witness to a Jewish community that dates to roughly the same era; it is the oldest remaining bath of its kind in Europe. Alternatively, come with us to discover a unique aperitif—wine vinegars made from grapes grown in the wine lands of the Palatine—with a visit to the Doktorenhof vinegar estate, where antique vinegar recipes find new life. Tour the cellars and taste the honey- or herb-flavored elixirs made there.

 Rhine River Cruise

October 30: Kehl (Strasbourg) UNESCOChoice Is YoursUniworld ExclusiveMotorcoachInsider

Featured Excursions: Choice of Strasbourg by canal with Notre Dame Cathedral or exclusive “Do as the Locals Do” Strasbourg walking tour.

You’ll board a canal boat and cruise past ancient covered bridges and their watchtowers, the picturesque Petite France district with its beautiful half-timbered houses and flower-filled window boxes, and the magnificent Gothic cathedral. You’ll also see the dynamic modern city that hosts numerous European Union organizations.  Or, if you prefer, take an intimate walking tour through Old Town, strolling through lively Broglie Square to elegant Place Kléber. Learn about the culinary traditions of Alsace and indulge in tasty pastries and coffee at a charming café. Then spend your afternoon at leisure in this beautiful city; a shuttle will take you to and from the ship.

 Rhine River Cruise

Charming villages, pastoral landscapes, and lush vineyards line this beautiful winding road. You may prefer to linger in the historic center of enchanting Colmar or continue on to the wine villages of Kayserberg and Riquewihr, where you will ramble along narrow lanes and pass half-timbered Medieval houses with conical roofs that are straight out of a fairytale illustration. Whichever you choose, you’ll be treated to an Alsatian specialty, flammekeuche, a delectable flatbread topped with bacon and onions. In the evening, enjoy a Captain’s Farewell and Gala Dinner.

About Uniworld's S.S. Antoinette

Super Ship (S.S.) Antoinette—the most luxurious river cruise ship in the world

What began as an inspiration, a dream without limitations, is about to become the ship, you’ll never forget. When you step aboard the S.S. Antoinette, you’ll immediately understand why the “S.S.” precedes “Antoinette,” as this appropriately means “Super Ship,” Uniworld’s newest addition to their collection of one-of-a-kind boutique river cruise ships.

Walking onto the S.S. Antoinette, you will immediately feel like you stepped into France’s Château de Versailles during the late 18th century with the character of the past thoughtfully blended with unusual elements creating luxurious elegance with welcoming warmth. A blue Strauss 10-foot Baccarat chandelier with huge sapphires, originally hung in New York’s famed Tavern on the Green, graces the two-story lobby. The finest Brazilian marble adorns the walls and floors and a sparkling 19th-century Venetian glass mirror rests high above the reception desk reflecting an air of grandeur.

It is clear as one continues to gaze around the remarkable surroundings, the S.S. Antoinette shares the same exquisite standards and meticulous attention to detail reflective throughout all of Uniworld’s fleet. Haute design, yet comfortable décor symbolize the style used by Mrs. Beatrice Tollman, godmother and namesake of Uniworld's River Beatrice, and President of Uniworld's sister company the award-winning Red Carnation Hotel Collection; her daughter, Mrs. Antoinette Tollman, godmother and namesake to the new S.S. Antoinette; and Mr. Brian Brennan, lead designer.

Arranged throughout the ship, is a collection of carefully selected original fine artwork from personal collections. Sketches in black and white, color lithographs, and oil on canvas paintings from a range of great artists, including Humphrey Jennings, John Bellany, and an extensive selection of work by Russian painters Yuri Matushevski and Viktor Templi are perfectly placed for guests’ enjoyment.
